Short Life Expected

It’s been confirmed Life Unexpected isn’t going to receive a back nine of episodes. Though the show hasn’t officially been cancelled it’s pretty evident that episode 13 will be its series finale.

Fans were worried when the show only received an order for additional scripts and The CW gave full season orders to freshmans Nikita and Hellcats as well as its more established line up. The show has been struggling in the ratings this season and seemed to be the show most likely to be cancelled first by the network.

When season one of Life Unexpected premiered I was one of its biggest supporters. I even went so far to voice why I would pick it over One Tree Hill if only one of them was renewed last season. Something has changed of late. Though I still watch it, I don’t have the same enthusiasm for the show as I did in the first season. I’ve been disappointed with certain aspects and I haven’t liked the path they’ve taken. My main issue has been about Lux’s relationship with teacher, Eric Daniels. Part of the problem is that this story is being done on Gossip Girl and Pretty Little Liars and in my opinion PLL is doing it better.

I’m still a supporter of the show and I do wish for it to continue. Its still a well written show with the potential to grow. This news doesn’t help but anything is possible.

Review: COMMUNITY season 2, episode 6 “Epidemiology 206″

The college Halloween party turns into a nightmare as, one by one, the students of Greendale High become zombies. “Epidemiology” draws inspiration from zombie movies like Dawn of the Dead to bring us one of the most enjoyable Halloween episodes this season.

From the beginning, this episode had me laughing. Dean Pelton (Jim Rash) dressing as Lady GaGa while a mix of ABBA songs and his personal voice memos play in the background is just the start. ABBA isn’t the kind of music you would consider for an episode like this, but that’s partly why it’s so funny. Having scenes like people running away from zombies while “Gimmie, Gimmie, Gimmie” plays in the background is a genius idea.

Review: THE MIDDLE season 2, episode 6 “Halloween”

It’s Halloween and the Hecks try to enjoy the night separately. Frankie (Patricia Heaton) is excited they’ve been invited to the neighborhood party but Mike (Neil Flynn) doesn’t want to dress up. Axl (Charlie McDermott) and his friends attempt to go to a haunted house party; Brick (Atticus Shaffer) goes trick-or-treating while Sue (Eden Sher) goes to a Halloween church event instead of her school dance.

Frankie’s excitement is counterbalanced by the unenthusiastic Mike. His reluctance to do anything fun really frustrates Frankie. They’ve been together for 17 years and she still wants to have fun with him, but you get the feeling the two of them don’t get to spend much time alone. Until she points that out, Mike is reluctant to let himself go. His style of dancing consists of not moving from one spot. It’s awkward and funny especially with Frankie dancing around him.

Review: GLEE season 2, episode 5 “The Rocky Horror Glee Show”

I have my reservations about how this latest themed episode will turn out. There has been varying success with the previous attempts and I am hoping “The Rocky Horror Glee Show” won’t be listed in the bad column. Surprisingly, it has many good points but there are also a few issues which need to be addressed.

Spurred by his jealousy of Carl (John Stamos) and Emma’s (Jayma Mays) relationship, Will (Matthew Morrison) puts on a production of The Rocky Horror Picture Show. The episode gives rare solo opportunities for a few of the cast members. Stamos gets his first number while we are treated to an exceptional solo from Mays. These performances, as well as one by Mercedes (Amber Riley), are great to hear. It would have been easier for the writers to have Kurt (Chris Colfer) play the role of ‘Frank-N-Furter’ but they choose to have Mercedes play the role after Mike (Harry Shum Jr.) pulls out.

Why Can't I Quit You?

So you've invested a few years of your life watching it, got to know the characters better than some of your family and friends but something doesn't feel right. The characters you've grown to love have become stunted, the stories are repetitive and you're left wondering what direction it can take.

The problem you have is that you can't seem to let go quite yet. How and when do you do it?

Do you feel like if you stop watching the show, that you either might miss something or it will get better. As the episodes go on, you keep saying 'the next time'; it will either get better or you will finally say goodbye. It's a problem I seem to be faced with every season - which shows will I continue to watch and which ones will I drop. The struggle continues throughout the year because there are certain shows I just can't seem to be able to shake off.

Review: COMMUNITY season 2, episode 5 “Messianic Myths and Ancient Peoples”

Shirley (Yvette Nicole Brown), Abed (Danny Pudi) and Pierce (Chevy Chase) are at the center of this week’s episode. I love how each member of the cast is given the opportunity to be in the spotlight. It shows it isn’t all about Jeff (Joel McHale) and it gives the rest of the cast a chance to shine.

After hearing how popular online videos are compared to her church attendance figures, Shirley asks Abed to help her make a religious film. Things don’t go exactly to plan and Abed makes his own film. It amazes me how popular his film becomes while it’s still being shot. Posters are around college and people are watching in amazement while the camera rolls. His reputation alone excites even Dean Pelton (Jim Rash) as he watches the filming when he’s supposed to be shutting it down due to Shirley’s complaint. Abed’s look, for the film, reminds me of an illusionist with long hair and leather pants.

Review: THE MIDDLE season 2, episode 5 “Foreign Exchange”

The Hecks are their usual dysfunctional selves in this hilarious episode. “Foreign Exchange” sees Frankie (Patricia Heaton) sign the family up for the foreign exchange program, thinking they can gain some cultural experiences from the visiting student.

When the family goes to pick up Japanese student, Takayuki (Matthew Moy) I thought he would be the wrong student. I’ve seen this kind of situation on other shows so I thought this episode would follow the same route. Though this didn’t happen, some great scenes came instead.

Review: COMMUNITY season 2, episode 4 “Basic Rocket Science”

Greendale’s rival, City College, has a space simulator and Dean Pelton (Jim Rash) wants to beat them by being, as he says, “the first community college to pretend to put a man in space.” The launch of the simulator is planned to go ahead with the press in attendance. The mission to ‘boldly go where no man has gone before’ isn’t quite applicable here – in this case it’s just the college parking lot.

We are afforded some substantial scenes involving Dean Pelton and we find out another one of his outside activities. The fact that Pelton needs the inappropriateness of the flag pointed out to him shows he’s a little slow on the uptake. Even if he didn’t know the meaning, the last word in ‘E Pluribus Anus’ pretty much spells it out. Just when I think Pelton can’t get any funnier, the writers add another layer of hilarity. I love that every so often the writers give the supporting cast a more prominent role. It freshens things up and provides the opportunity for more character dynamics.

Review: THE MIDDLE season 2, episode 4 “The Quarry”

Mike (Neil Flynn) catches Axl (Charlie McDermott) skipping school but it turns out he’s on suspension… for skipping school. Mike decides to teach Axl a lesson by making him work at the quarry for the rest of his suspension. At first Axl annoys Mike and you can see that Mike can’t wait for him to be back at school. Mike’s revised plan backfires. The main problem is one of the quarrymen, Chuck (Greg Cipes), has everything that appeals to Axl. Mike is trying to get his message across but every time he tries, something else attracts Axl to the life Chuck is living.

Mike has a unique way of talking about and to his kids. He refers to Axl as an idiot to his face and to Frankie (Patricia Heaton). When he calls Axl an idiot, he does it with the best of intentions and it actually helps to get his point across in explaining why Axl shouldn’t quit school.

Review: GLEE season 2, episode 4 “Duets”

Will Schuester (Matthew Morrison) gives the glee club the assignment of duets with a prize for the best performance. Finn (Cory Monteith) pairs with Rachel (Lea Michele) and Mike (Harry Shum Jr) and Tina (Jenna Ushkowitz) pair up. Finn and Rachel plan to throw the competition so new member, Sam (Chord Overstreet) can have a chance at winning. Their meddling causes Sam to partner with Quinn (Dianna Agron) after he was meant to sing with Kurt (Chris Colfer). Brittany (Heather Morris) is upset because Santana (Naya Rivera) is singing with Mercedes (Amber Riley) so she pairs up with Artie (Kevin McHale).

The ultimate goal is for Sam to win the competition and Rachel receives the benefits. We all know how competitive Rachel gets when she wants to win. Her character does show a little growth, especially with Kurt. It’s good to see another side to Rachel that isn’t just about being the best. Finn and Rachel make a pretty good team when it comes to their meddling. I couldn’t stop laughing when they were performing “Born Again.” With the recent sensitivity from last week’s episode centered on religion, it was in poor taste but seemed to do the trick.

Review: COMMUNITY season 2, episode 3 “The Psychology of Letting Go”

Annie (Alison Brie) and Britta (Gillian Jacobs) are trying to raise money for the oil spill. Annie raises more money than Britta and Britta is jealous. I’m not surprised by this given Britta’s competitive nature. It’s a regular occurrence and recently evident in Anthropology 101 and Pascal’s Triangle Revisited. Britta dresses like Annie to prove a point about the way Annie is raising the money. What eventually follows is a messy and profitable mud fight between them. Both girls confess to each other their reasons for kissing/sleeping with Jeff. Whether their reasons are true is another question.

Though it’s pretty evident that Britta is jealous, both girls fail to notice Shirley’s (Yvette Nicole Brown) jealously over Annie and Britta working together. She keeps dropping hints but it’s never acknowledged.

Review: THE MIDDLE season 2, episode 3 “The Diaper Incident”

There’s a moment in time when you learn some of the things your parents told you is a lie. Brick (Atticus Shaffer) has that moment after he finds out Frankie (Patricia Heaton) lied about chocolate being illegal for children under ten. He starts to test some other things Frankie told him, like his face might stay the same if he makes funny faces. Shaffer is entertaining in these scenes – his reactions at being disappointed in his mother are brilliant.

Frankie gets Mike (Neil Flynn) to have a physical. He tells her he’s received a clean bill of health – this coincides with certain things that make her feel old. A store worker mistakenly thinks Frankie is buying adult diapers and she throws her back but tries to hide it from Mike. While taking a bath, Frankie explains to Brick why she tells certain lies. I love how she explains that while it’s bad to lie, certain small lies are permitted when protecting someone. That kind of logic has to confuse a kid. Mike enters the bathroom and questions the mess in the bathroom. Brick lies to his father but there’s a problem – Brick has a “tell.” He whispers he’s lying.

Review: GLEE season 2, episode 3 “Grilled Cheesus”

Religion is a subject that causes many debates in both public and private settings. Grilled Cheesus treads carefully when broaching the subject. It would have been easy to take a different direction with this but the writers handled the hot topic well, showing a good contrast between different types of belief systems.

Kurt’s (Chris Colfer) father Burt (Mike O’Malley) is fighting for his life after suffering a heart attack. When others are speaking about their faith, Kurt reveals he doesn’t believe in God. The rest of the glee club tries to rally round him but because they are being spiritual, he pushes them away. The scenes with a younger Kurt and his father really help capture Kurt’s emotions when singing “Hold Your Hand.” I also think it was a great arrangement of the song. You can see Kurt’s pain in every one of his scenes, and sense some of the guilt he has seeing as his last words with his father were an argument. These emotional scenes showcase Colfer’s broad range as an actor and are definitely Emmy-worthy in my opinion.

Community & Chloroform

Sometimes there's one scene in an episode that has you laughing so hard tears start to fall or you continually rewind it. This week there was one scene that had me like this. It was from Community and it was involving chloroform. I mention this scene in my review of the episode for Series.nu. Community TV put the scene up and I couldn't help but highlight it.

Troy and Abed are trying to find an that proves Jeff's old colleague got him fired. When the cleaner finds them in the office, Annie tries to help.

Review: COMMUNITY season 2, episode 2 “Accounting for Lawyers”

Drew Carey and Rob Corddry guest star as we get a peak into Jeff Winger’s (Joel McHale) old world. Corddry plays Alan Connor, an old colleague from the law firm Jeff was fired from, while Drew Carey plays Ted, Jeff’s old boss.

Alan has been attending Narcotics Anonymous at Greendale College. After bumping into him, Jeff starts to hang out with his ex-colleague. Annie (Alison Brie) recognizes Alan from the NA meetings and recalls Alan mentioning he sent an email to the Bar Association telling them about Jeff’s deception regarding his education.

Review: THE MIDDLE season 2, episode 2 “Homecoming”

It’s a proud moment for the Heck parents as Axl (Charlie McDermott) makes the varsity football team. This means Frankie (Patricia Heaton) gets to walk her eldest child out on the field with Mike (Neil Flynn). They are faced with a dilemma when homecoming clashes with Sue’s (Eden Sher) first cross-country meet. We see the parents trying to figure out who goes to which event – even considering playing rock, paper, scissors to help make the decision. It’s evident they both want to accompany Axl, especially Frankie. I love watching her talk to both Sue and Axl, trying to find a way to make it to homecoming.

Review: Glee season 2, episode 2 “Britney/Brittany”

Finally one of TV’s longest mysteries was solved, Brittany’s full name – Brittany Susan Pierce. All jokes aside this week’s episode was Britney Spears themed and Heather Morris got her first solo performance.

It was great to see Morris come to the forefront and she was definitely a standout in a disjointed episode. I love Morris’ effortless deliveries of her lines. When Glee first started, Sue’s (Jane Lynch) one-liners were a standout but slowly, Brittany’s character has been given more dialogue as the series progresses. She doesn’t disappoint with funny line after funny line. In Britney/Brittany one of Brittany’s favorite lines was “This room looks like the one on that spaceship where I got probed.”

Review: Community season 2, episode 1 “Anthropology 101

A new season and a new subject await the study group at Greendale Community College. Anthropology 101 is the subject and Betty White guest stars as the anthropology professor, June Bauer.

I felt like it was the first day of college for me, finally getting to see some of my favorite people after a long summer. With such a build up, I wasn’t disappointed by Anthropology 101 at all. The episode had me laughing throughout and was a gentle reminder to why Community is one of the best sitcoms on tv today.

The big questions from the season finale were what would happen between Jeff (Joel McHale) and Annie (Alison Brie) following their kiss at the Transfer Dance, and how Britta (Gillian Jacobs) would be after her love confession to Jeff. I was intrigued to see what path the characters would take

Review: The Middle season 2, episode 1 “Back to School”

The Middle is back for its second season and proves that being on top of things isn’t always necessary for some families.

It’s the first day of school for the three kids and as usual, the Hecks are unorganized. Frankie (Patricia Heaton) decides enough is enough and makes a plan to keep on top of things. It’s funny watching her and Mike (Neil Flynn) rush around trying to get the kids ready for the day. In contrast, the two of them actually work well together when they are dysfunctional.

The three kids are my favorite characters – they are so different from each other but equally make me laugh in every episode. Axel (Charlie McDermott) is having trouble adjusting his body clock since Frankie set an alarm for him. This leads to him barbequing late at night. Sue’s (Eden Sher) quest to be noticed is a regular occurrence. I enjoy watching her get excited about things. Having made the cross country team, she wears a heavy sweatshirt to show she’s part of the team, despite the fact it’s hot. I enjoy seeing how proud she is making the school paper because she ruins the prep rally. In other circumstances, a teenager would be embarrassed but she sees it as an opportunity to be known.

Review: Glee season 2, episode 1 “Audition”

We last saw New Directions placing third at Regionals. Now the students of McKinley High are back from their summer off. Some things have changed and some things have stayed the same.

Audition – New Directions is one member down due to Matt (Dijon Talton) transferring. The character Matt was never given a chance and I think it’s a shame for the actor. All the school clubs have placed their try-out sheets. While the Cheerios has pages of names, with a queue of students yet to sign, New Directions hasn’t got a single one.

ADVANCE REVIEW: RUNNING WILDE – SEASON 1 EPISODE 1 “PILOT”

I had the chance to review the pilot for Will Arnett's new comedy, Running Wilde. It premieres on Tuesday, September 21st on FOX.

The show teams Will Arnett and Keri Russell with the people behind Arrested Development and it’s enough to get anyone who’s a fan of them, excited.

I’ve been waiting to see Arnett in a regular TV role again as he’s one of those people that make me laugh no matter what he does. His guest appearances on 30 Rock and Parks & Recreation weren’t enough for me. I was wondering how casting Russell with Arnett would work as I’ve only seen Russell in Felicity. After viewing the pilot, I’m still on the fence about the duo.

Returning shows I'm looking forward to

After waiting all summer, the time has finally come for the shows that ended in May, to return. Thought there are many shows I'm looking forward to returning, there are some that I'm looking forward to more.

The Vampire Diaries
This show was one of the best new shows last year. It had the ability to keep me on the edge of my seat every episode and its finale was no different. It was a finale that had me buzzing about it weeks after I saw it. I was surprised by how much I enjoyed it from the very first episode as I was rolling my eyes at yet another show about vampires but somehow it continues to be fresh.

Grey's Anatomy
Like The Vampire Diaries, it was one of my favourite finales but for different reasons - it played upon the emotions. We were promised a game changer and it certainly delivered. How the characters deal with the aftermath is the question.

Fringe
This show is in my top 5 shows and like the previous two, was one of my favourite finales. The show just keeps getting better with outstanding performances and storylines. With the alternative universe being shown more, the show looks to keep up its consistency of being something not to miss.

Community
This is one of my favourite comedies and if you haven't seen it already, just watch the episode Modern Warfare and you'll be hooked. It has one of the best ensembles with funny and consistent writing. I shall continue to review the episodes on Series.nu

Other shows that I'm looking forward to but just not as much
Parenthood
Life Unexpected
Modern Family
Cougar Town
Glee
Castle
The Middle
The Good Wife

Two shows that I was considering dropping form my viewing list were Gossip Girl and Desperate Housewives but the casting of Katie Cassidy and Vanessa Williams respectively have breathed a new sense of anticipation for me and I shall keenly watch to see how both shows utilize the actresses.

Must Be The Music a breath of fresh air?

I have to admit that when I first saw the promos for Must Be The Music, sceptical was one of the words to describe my reaction. I rolled my eyes at the prospect of yet another reality music show.

Though I enjoy the initial audition stages of X Factor and Idol, I have grown tired of the latter stages of both these shows. The endless theme nights including songs that are performed every year have made be lose interest in the live shows.

No matter how well a singer performs week after week or how much I like them, it doesn't guarantee I'll buy their music. Just because you do an outstanding version of a Mariah Carey or Beatles song doesn't mean I'll purchase your album.

Brits Prefer Ad Free World Cup Final

Now that the World Cup is over, normal TV schedule has resumed but what have we learned from the last game - Britain prefers to watch their football coverage without ad interruptions.

Over the tournament, coverage was equally shared between BBC and ITV but the final was the only game both channels broadcast at the same time. This was also shown on their HD channels.

18.4 million viewers watched Spain win over the four channels – BBC1, BBC HD, ITV1 and ITV1 HD.

Review: Glee s1ep22 - Journey (Series.nu)

The moment has finally arrived as New Directions competes at Regionals. This episode recaptures the best parts of the show – a good storyline, brilliant and well placed song choices, with a Journey medley at the heart of it.

With the episode entitled Journey, it takes a brief look into how far the glee club has come as they deal with the possible realization that the club will be over after Regionals.

The episode is filled with some heart warming moments. My favorite moments include the Journey medley and the placement of Quinn giving birth during Vocal Adrenaline’s performance of Bohemian Rhapsody. I like the way the scenes were cut and placed together.

Review: Glee s1ep21 - Funk (Series.nu)

From the second the episode started I was filled with confusion. The recap stated Jesse had left the glee club but in the first scene, Kurt talked about having Jesse in the group and Rachel was surprised to see Jesse on stage with Vocal Adrenaline.

I questioned why the episode title was used so frequently. I didn’t go down the route of counting how many times the word ‘funk’ was said, but it was definitely too much for my fingers and toes to manage.

The whole episode left me wondering what the vision was. Most times I felt it was all over the place, jumping too quickly at times from one scene to the next.

Review: Glee s1ep20 - Theatricality (Series.nu)

Vampires are real – at least in the mind of Principal Figgins and that’s how the episode opens. Figgins has Will and Tina in his office telling her she can’t dress Goth. With the KISS and Lady GaGa inspired outfits, they are the lighthearted storylines sandwiched between a serious and at one point emotional episode.

Review: Glee - Dream On (Series.nu)

There are two big issues in this episode — Artie and his dream to walk and Rachel’s dream of meeting her mother. Artie’s storyline really delved into the subject of disability and significantly follows last week’s episode which showed a quadriplegic. Will’s nemesis Bryan Ryan helped balance the episode with a lighter storyline.

When I heard Joss Whedon would be directing an episode of Glee, I was immediately excited. He is no stranger to directing musical shows given his previous experience of Buffy’s ‘Once More with Feeling’ and Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog. The subtle angles used, like Will and Ryan’s bar scene and the mall dance scene had me captive.

Lost for the Final Time

The wait is nearly over and soon the last episode of Lost will be aired.

Some have been billing it the television event of the year and further proof of how momentous it is, the episode will be simulcast over parts of the world when it's aired at the same time as the U.S. West Coast.

Sky1 in the UK, Fox Italia and Telecom Italia in Italy, Cuatro Spain, Fox Spain and Portugal, Digiturk Turkey, HOT Israel will broadcast the airing despite the time difference. While CTV Canada will broadcast the finale at the same time as the U.S. East Coast. Other international networks will air the finale in 24-48 of the broadcast.

It's hard to fathom the significance of this simulcast which is normally reserved for award shows and sport events. I do wonder if other shows that have a big international audience will get the same chance to broadcast their final episode.

One thing that has helped this show is the fact there was a clear time frame for when the show was to end. Heroes, which was also an international hit was recently cancelled. If a rumoured 2 hour movie does happen will NBC do the same?

Over the past six seasons I've enjoyed the unexplained elements of Lost. There are many things that I don't understand and I'm not sure I ever will. I believe there are questions that won't be answered in the finale. Regardless of this I've enjoyed the whole series from the smoke monster to polar bears, time jumping to flash forwards, backwards and sideways.

One day I'll sit down and watch all the episodes over again and I'm sure I'll discover things that I missed the first time. Until then I've got my snacks ready to enjoy the ride for one final time.

Review: Glee - Laryngitis (Series.nu)

Puck has shaved his Mohawk and like Samson, he’s lost his strength. I liked the way the opening scene was shot showing jaw dropping reactions and Brittany not recognizing him at all. Puck’s trademark was his Mohawk so I too was surprised to see it gone.

Puck’s popularity at the school has plummeted and now he’s the one being dumped into the school dumpster. He thinks the only way he can get his status back is to date a cheerleader so he sets his sights on Mercedes, who initially resists. Eventually, Mercedes begins dating him despite knowing what his ulterior motive is. Someone isn’t happy about this new couple and surprisingly it’s not Quinn. Despite people thinking that Quinn and Puck are a couple, we find out they aren’t even dating. Since Quinn left Finn’s home, she’s been living with Puck’s family. It’s taken a few episodes to get to this point and I do wonder why they’ve made it look like Puck and Quinn were dating.

In a first for Glee, ‘The Power of Madonna’ is an episode made up entirely of songs from Madonna’s back catalogue.

We learn that Sue Sylvester is a massive Madonna fan. She continues blackmailing Principal Figgins by making him play Madonna songs over the PA system. Sue encourages the Cheerio squad to act more like Madonna and to date younger men. She informs them she will now only address them by their first names.

Rachel seeks advice from the other Glee Club girls, hiding the fact that it’s about Jesse; he wants to have sex but she’s still a virgin and not ready. The girls talk about how guys don’t care about their feelings.

Review: Glee - Hell-O (Series.nu)

After a 4 month break, Glee is back with Broadway stars Idina Menzel (Wicked) and Jonathan Groff (Spring Awakening) guest starring.

New Directions are on a high after their win at Sectionals. Kurt (Chris Colfer), Rachel (Lea Michele) and Mercedes (Amber Riley) think their win will help them rule the school. Unfortunately for them, the realization hits them literally in the face, when drinks are thrown at them. Will Schuester (Matthew Morrison) starts to prepare the club for Regionals by having them pick songs that have ‘hello’ in the title, knowing if they don’t win Regionals, glee club will cease to exist.

Review: Skins - Series 4

As the dust settles on another series, Skins has already been commissioned for a fifth and sixth series. Details of auditions have been announced to cast a new set of characters. There is also news of a possible film, which might feature characters from both sets of casts. The opener drew 938,000 but the viewing figures declined week by week, dipping as low as 648,000 with the Effy episode. The figure for the finale did rise with 728,000 viewers.

Series 4 has been described by some as too depressing; suicide attempts, breakups, deaths, fighting and mental illness. I do agree that this was the case but then the show has always tried to push the envelope with certain subjects. To me, this series seem to wreck most of the good things they achieved in series 3. Pandora, Thomas, Emily and Naomi's relationships went south and each episode seemed to be about how bad things can get for the characters. The only person that had a happy episode was JJ. The whole series was disjointed at times and certain things just seem to come out of nothing, like Effy's mental illness. They had a real opportunity to do something great with the subject but her psychiatrist being obsessed with her and killing Freddie spoilt it. It seems like they are having a regular occurrence of one of the cast members dying, though Chris' death in series 2 didn't invoke the same kind of emotion.

My favourite episodes were the ones centred on Emily, Katie and Cook. With Pandora and Naomi not having centred episodes, I think they could have at least one of them share an episode with one of the others. I was however disappointed in how they developed Cook after his centred episode. It seemed like they were really trying to give him another dimension, when he took the fall for Naomi and also went to prison. Afterward, it didn't seem like it was worth going down that angle, when they had him escape and behave exactly the same as before.

Will Young's character seemed pointless and I don't think it served any purpose. Any of the other faculty members could have delivered the message to Freddie, that he was trying to, and seemed stupid doing it. Hugo Speer sold the part of Jon Foster even though I didn't like what they did with him. The main highlights of the supporting cast were the rest of the Fitches. The twins mother, Jenna (Ronni Ancona), father Rob (John Bishop) and younger brother, James (Redd Smith)

It will be interesting to see what route they take with the new cast and if they follow some of the same patterns like killing off one of the characters or having a one of the characters suffer something traumatic involving their brain (Tony losing his memory in series 2 and Effy's mental illness and suicide attempt).

The Bill to hang up its cuffs

I do have to say that hearing the news that 'The Bill' has been axed after 27 years, shocked me. Though I haven't watched the show in over a decade, it's one of those shows that that was part of the furniture when it comes to UK TV. With a show that runs for so long, you don't think of an end.

They say the decision was a creative one and not a way to cut cost but with a reported 90 jobs at risk, its hard not to think that way.

It will be interesting to see what takes its place in the evening schedule; more reality TV, new UK drama or imports.

Review: Skins - Everyone

Told over a two day period, the teens are in each other's orbit for their last episode. Converging at Naomi's house, it's the morning after a night of partying.

Cook's latest conquest stuns Naomi and the rest of the gang. Cook doesn't see it at first but the girl resembles Effy and in a slip, Naomi even addresses her by that name. The next day, Cook is nearly caught by the police as they close on him at Naomi house. An escape leads him to Freddie's shed and one by one, everyone convenes there to celebrate Freddie's birthday.

Dr Foster made a couple of appearances; telling Effy he had quit his job and lurking in the shadows outside Freddie's house. Cook follows Foster to his home and confronts him after finding bloody clothes.

At the beginning, I was left wondering when Naomi and Emily's dynamic switched; Naomi was perky around Emily. It was like their scene from Katie's episode never happened. Emily was the opposite; being quiet and in one scene, she was alone and crying.

As this was the last episode, with the current cast, some storylines were being tied up. There was no additional storyline regarding JJ and Katie. They were supporting characters; JJ babysitting his girlfriend's baby and moments with Cook. Katie's scenes with Thomas, Pandora and Effy were more about them and not her.

I have to say that I was underwhelmed by the end of the episode. My main problems were the way they played out certain characters and the last scene with Cook and Foster. It left me thinking 'is that it?' The scene between Thomas and Freddie's sister played out a little too long. Things were resolved for Naomi and Emily, but Thomas and Pandora were left with possibilities. Both are heading to Harvard but only Pandora knows it. The reality of Thomas being given a sport scholarship within a day is lost on me. Nothing was resolved for Effy, though she did crack a smile or two. I do have point out a funny moment when Freddie's sister, JJ and Cook were dancing to Kylie Minogue's 'Can't get you out of my head'.

This episode was not among my favourites but with another chapter finished, another must begin. When it returns, there shall be a new set of characters. I will be doing a post briefly talking about the series as a whole.

Review: Skins - Effy

I've been trying to let the episode resonate and not post the first thing that came out. To say that I was shocked by this episode was an understatement. For the most part of the episode, I have to commend Skins for tackling the subject of Effy's illness. Sure, this isn't the first show to tackle a subject like this but with this show being aimed a particular audience; it was good for them to try. Unfortunately, for the subject itself, most people will not be talking about that. Instead they will be talking about the last 5 minutes.

Only read on if you've seen the episode

The last time we saw Effy, she was lying in hospital after her attempted suicide, in episode 5. Now she's in a psychiatric hospital being counselled by John Foster, played by Hugo Speer. After being released, Effy follows a disciplined schedule, even writing the things she needs to do on a whiteboard. Effy reconnects with Freddie for the first time since the hospital; she refused to see him while getting treatment.

Going with Pandora to pick up her college results, Effy is called into Mr Flood office. More interested in league table averages and funding, Flood shreds Effy's results. These had said she failed all her exams because she couldn't take them due to her treatment. Flood gave her a new paper of results that said she got all A's.

Continuing to see Foster, she seems to coping well, but memories are starting to fade to the point that she refers to herself as Elizabeth and doesn't recognise Cook. Freddie goes to see Foster but encounters a locked door and a baseball bat; all that we see is blood spatter.

My initial feeling about Foster was right; I knew there was something not to be trusted. However I wasn't expecting him to do what he did. I didn't see the point of having Foster putting on Phil Collins and "rocking out" to Easy Lover. Are Skins trying to say that we should never trust a Phil Collins fan?

In season 2 when Chris died, there was an emotional connection with the characters and viewers. With Freddie's demise, Skins seem to be going the opposite direction, in preferring to shock. It almost seemed desperate rather than story driven. They might have a lot of people talking about it but more people will wonder why they chose the way they did.

Next week will be last in the series and also the last with the current cast.

Review: Modern Family - Truth Be Told (Series.nu)

Check out my review of episode 17 from Modern Family, now up on Series.nu

Katherine Heigl's possible Grey's exit - do we still care?

The TV buzz over the past few hours has included the possible end of
Katherine Heigl's time on Grey's Anatomy (EW was one of the first to break the story). She's been missing for most
of the season due to extended leave to shoot a film and maternity
leave since adopting a child.

The long running saga, off camera, could possibly be coming to an end.
It has actually become boring hearing the same story of her leaving,
every season so if it's true, this yearly dance can come to an end.

In my opinion, the character Izzie was at her best in the first couple
of seasons. I for one found the whole hallucinating sleeping with your
dead fiancé ridiculous.

The show is over populated, so it can do with shedding a few characters. I haven't missed the character at all and the show has proved that there's sufficient actors/characters to follow.

As for the actress herself, her current film career is
filled with not very good romantic comedies that don't even use the
best clichés. Heigl proved with her Emmy win that drama is where she
sells it and she should try and burst out of the rom-com bubble before
she gets eternally typecast.

Melrose Place - international hit?

I have to say that I received a good laugh after reading Thomas Calabro, who plays Dr. Michael Mancini, recent interview on E!'s website.

It wasn't because he thought Melrose Place was going to return or hint towards more cast from the original making a reappearance. No it was the statement about the show being an international hit. Here's the quote "Here's what's going on with that: We're coming back," Calabro tells us. "Right now, we're airing our first five or six episodes internationally, and I think the show's a big international hit. That's enough to bring a show back."

I didn't even know that it was airing anywhere else but the US and UK. I can't speak for how Melrose Place is doing in other countries but it debuted, in the UK, with 113,000 viewers on Five's digital channel Fiver, with another 7,000 on the catchup service an hour later. At the time, it gave the channel its best ever Wednesday ratings. However the second episode drew 89,000 viewers.

When Archer debuted a couple of weeks later, on a Thursday night, it gave the channel 159,000 viewers for each of its half-hour instalments at 10pm and 10.30pm.

It's definitely not a hit here where a catchup episode of Desperate Housewives, shown an hour after airing can attract more viewers at 11pm then Melrose Place can at 9pm. I can't say I know anybody that watches it and the media certainly don't mention it any more when reporting ratings or anything else.

I have heard many times that US networks don't look into international ratings. Why would they, if they don't count online viewing from people in their own country. When does someone viewing in Boston, UK count the same as someone from Boston, US.

If The CW choose to renew Melrose Place, then it will be based on viewer figures in the US, money and whether or not they find something better to air instead.

Review: Skins - JJ

The first few minutes are very chopping, as they try to show what an average day for JJ is. This includes work, his mother picking him up, her testing him on science and him talking in a microphone about his thoughts for the day.

JJ has a crush on a girl from work called Lara. Thomas, who also works there, prompts JJ into asking her out. Thomas tells JJ that if he doesn't do it in ten seconds, then he'll ask her out himself. JJ runs to stop him and ends up asking her out over the tannoy system.

Before his date with Lara, Freddie brings a heavy bag to JJ's room. Inside is a recently escaped, Cook. JJ hides him in his room, locking the door as he leaves for his date.

JJ appears a couple of hours early so Lara still needs to get ready. While she's doing that, JJ entertains her son with his magic tricks. Unfortunately, when trying to change baby Albert's nappy, he pees in JJ's face.

Nervousness and a comedy of errors lead to an awkward date between the two of them and failed escape plan for JJ. Despite this and JJ spitting drink her face, the two of them sleep together.

JJ is seen outside the psych support centre by Albert's father Liam. Coupled with not wanting to talk to him after meeting his parents, JJ head butts Liam at work.

There are 2 key conversations that helps JJ towards the end of the episode; his conversations with his father and Liam. There was also a conversation with Emily but I feel that was more about Emily's issues. Maybe it serves a better purpose for her to deal with her issues with Naomi.

Move over John Cusack and Say Anything. Apparently the way to win a girl's heart is playing Spandau Ballet's True, on a mini guitar, accompanied by others. I have to say I found it corny and by the end of the episode, I was left wondering if this was all in JJ's head. There were only things of note for me in this episode; them finishing off by playing Spandau Ballet's Gold and that I want to try JJ's choice of drink, Capribena - Capri Sun and Ribena.

As I said before, the beginning was choppy. I found it uneven and it seemed more rushed than usual. This wasn't an episode that I enjoyed and its the second episode in a row that I've come away feeling less than impressed. Effy's episode is next and I hope it picks in quality.

Review: Skins - Freddie

Freddie and Effy are in their own indulgent, drug induced world. So much so that Freddie is neglecting his family, friends and studies. The latter sees him in a meeting with Mr Love (Educational Intervention), played by Will Young. I felt just as uncomfortable as Freddie was, watching this scene; the Michael Jackson references didn't help nor did the slight reference to Young's song, 'Leave Right Now'.

Freddie spends the episode struggling with the past, concerning his mother, and the present, with how Effy is behaving; both women have more in common than he would have wished for.

I'm not going into the specifics of the episode on purpose, all I will say is that they tackle a big subject. I feel like they are trying to get an emotion from the audience that they achieved from one of the episodes in series two.

I would really like to know how much time had passed from last week's episode and this week's. Effy has always been intense but she seemed like a completely different person and I feel like I had missed an episode.

This episode left me scratching my head. I commend the effort of tackling the storyline but in the context of the series, it seemed disconnected at times. Other main characters were thrown in at brief moments but I don't think they helped the story. I was expecting more with the character Mr Love and it left me feeling flat.

I think Freddie's scenes with his grandfather and father could have been slightly extended to help him, and us, understand more what his father went through with his mother. I feel this was an important element to why Freddie wanted to tackle things on his own.

Next week it's JJ's episode.

Castle coming to the UK - yay and nay?

On Thursday it was announced that UKTV's Alibi had picked up the rights to broadcast Castle. I've been lucky enough to catch a few episodes and have mentioned, in a previous post, that I really like this show. Richard Castle has become one of my favourite TV characters.

After my initial excitement wore off, the realisation of it all took over; the show will be on Alibi. This might not mean much to some people but for me, this channel is a way for me to catch some of the episodes of Murder She Wrote that I didn't catch the first, second, third or fifteenth time it has every been aired.

Yes the channel does have crime drama's but its line up consists mostly of rebroadcasts from other UK channels, some dating back to the 80's; Murdoch Mysteries is one of a very small handful of shows that have originally aired in the past couple of years.

I read The Hollywood Reporter's story about the acquisition, which included quotes from UKTV acquisitions manager Alexandra Finlay "This acquisition exemplifies the channel's ambition to secure other key U.S. and international crime content in the future."

Alibi boss Steve Hornsey added "Alibi is well known for its high-quality British content, and introducing a hugely successful U.S. series in "Castle" will not only broaden the appeal of the channel but also the editorial mix. Adding Castle to our schedule should be seen as a clear message of intent."

I thought that if one of the main five channels didn't pick Castle up then maybe Sky1, E4, ITV2 or one of Five's sister channels might pick it up. These have proven track records with showing US TV and higher viewing numbers.

Scepticism aside, I do hope the show does well enough and others get to enjoy it. I will be keen to see what advertising is done, if it performs well and if the channel does add some more new content to help it become more than just a channel of repeats.

Review: Skins - Katie

The other half of the twins, Katie gets her bite at a solo episode. The show opens with her dressing older than she is, with a pearl necklace to round of her ageing outfit; she's helping her mother with her wedding planning business.

Katie receives some shocking news and without revealing what it is, she promptly dumps her boyfriend straight after. Looking for someone to talk to, she calls Emily, but it goes to voicemail. She then tries to speak to her mother, but she's too busy finding out that her husband has been hiding the true extent of their debt problems.

At the hen night, for the wedding her mother is planning, Katie meets the new girlfriend of the footballer she dated in the previous series. With literally a push, Katie ends up tripping and punching her, leading to the business being sacked by their only client.

Katie and Effy share a scene (Effy and Freddie were in the club where the hen night took place) talking about how differently things are for Katie now. I found it strange at how calm Katie was towards Effy. She was so angry at the girl in the club but barely bats an eyelid at Effy, who beat her with a rock last year. Katie doesn't even make reference to it and instead asks "why are you being nice to me?"

Katie spends the whole time trying to keep her family together, while trying to find someone to talk to about what she's dealing with. She's the one that goes to Naomi and asks for her family to stay over, after their home is repossessed. Despite slapping her sister, she comforts her after the truth comes out about Naomi.

I had issues with a couple of things; one being the Effy scene as I mentioned before and the other being Katie's scene with Thomas, when they get locked in a bathroom together. She does talk to him about what's been on her mind, but I don't feel that what lead up to it was necessary.

Katie finally tells her mother her news but also lets her feelings out about her mother and how she's been treating the rest of the family. In the last scene, her fragmented family come together in their empty house.

There is a real growth shown in the character. This episode shows us that there's more to Katie than just being a bitch. She's trying her best to keep everything together but I don't think we get to see and feel how upset she really is. I feel like the show just skimmed the surface and could have gone a little deeper. Like I mentioned in my review of Emily's episode, it was good to see them centred separately.

Next up: Freddie

Life Unexpected vs One Tree Hill? My choice is...

Early today The CW announced new season pick-ups for Supernatural, Gossip Girl, 90210, The Vampire Diaries and America’s Next Top Model. No news yet on Smallville, Melrose Place, Life Unexpected and One Tree Hill.

According Kristin at E!, only one will return between Life Unexpected and One Tree Hill. If it came down to a vote, my choice would be Life Unexpected. I have watched every episode of One Tree Hill but this season I've finally felt like this show has run its course. Story lines are not attention grabbing, things feel repetitive plus seven is a good number to end on. I don't think the departures of Hilarie Burton and Chad Michael Murray played any part, as in my opinion, it was declining when they were on the show.

Most shows that start in high school, suffer through the transition when they move on to college. One Tree Hill jumped past that and at first it worked. I touched on a few points earlier in the season to why I was finding it hard to like this season.

Regardless of whether its renewed, this shall be the last season that I shall watch the residents of Tree Hill.

The reason why my vote is for Life Unexpected is that it's fresh, fun and has intriguing dynamics. It's a show that I'm not complaining about, I'm excited to see a new episode. Even my mother, who isn't in The CW's target demographic, likes this show. Yes, it is early days, but this show seems to be hitting the mark with fans and critics. I hope the viewing figures keep up and this show gets another season, maybe even a full season order.

Grey's Anatomy and The Time Warp

Forget about FlashForward, it's all about flash sideways and flashbacks. Brothers & Sisters recently announced their casting of their flashback episode but, in the US, this week's it's the turn of Grey's Anatomy.

The episdoe synopsis is "In his new role as Chief, Derek restores the hospital lecture series, and Richard, Bailey and Callie present to the group pivotal surgical cases from their pasts - Bailey reflects on her first days as a shy resident, Callie looks back on a polio case, and Richard recalls a case in which he and Ellis worked on a patient diagnosed with GRID, a virus later called AIDS."

Guest starring will be Sarah Paulson and J. August Richards as Young Ellis Grey and Young Richard Webber and Missi Pyle as Bailey's Former Nemesis, Dr. Nicole Baylow.

Check out the two promos below and in honour of the episode being named 'The Time Warp', a clip from the Rocky Horror Picture Show.

Review: Skins - Cook

Cook is in trouble and this time it's serious. Following on from his "one-sided" fight from last week, he is arrested. As part of his bail conditions he is fitted with an electronic tag, set a curfew and ordered to live with his mother. Not only do we get to meet her and but also his little brother.

Throughout the the episode, Cook seems conflicted; keeping up his tough guy routine, possible guilt over his involvement in Sophia's death, his feelings for Effy and jealously of Freddie. We get to see a softer side of him in his scenes with his brother and Naomi. She tells him everything that came out from last week's episode.

There's a moment where Cook realises that his actions have consequences as he sees the influence he has over his brother. He opens up a little with Naomi but the real telling scene is with his lawyer, where he lets it all out.

It was good to see another side to Cook and it kind of made him more likeable. Part of the problem I had with his character last season was that I found him too one-dimensional. We also get a little peak into his relationship with his mother.

I don't want to use the word redemption but he grows up a bit towards the end of the episode, taking responsibility for his actions and surprisingly for Naomi's. It's a real character growth and I hope it's not the last we see of him this season.

Next week's episode is all about Katie.

Friday 5 February 2010

Review: Skins - Emily

The episode looks more into what role Naomi played into Sophia death. Following her revelation to Thomas, she tells Emily about selling the deceased girl drugs.

The episode actually centres around Emily; her investigation into Sophia and her own family. Emily visits the girl's home and slowly unravels the truth.

Emily's mother doesn't accept that she's gay; she tries to bribe her into going away with Noami and doesn't invite Naomi to dinner; Katie's new boyfriend was invited.

Emily doubts Naomi and can't seem to let her jealously go throughout the episode. By the end, we find out why Naomi didn't want Emily investigating Sophie's death and the revelation changes everything.

I was surprised that they steered the episode the way they did. The outcome was a bit predictable. The scene with Emily and her dad was played out well. It was good for her to have a conversation with a parent where it wasn't about her sexuality, just about how she was feeing. There's more than one layer to their conversation, following his confession about being bankrupt and his infidelity when he was younger.

It was also good to see Emily and Katie have more individual identities visually, especially with it being just an Emily episode, as opposed to having a combined episode for the twins like last season.

Fans of the popular couple won't be happy by the outcome but the last scene does give a little hope into their fate.

The next episode will be centred around Cook and the consequence of his fight, after seeing Effy and Freddie together.

Review: Life Unexpected - Rent Uncollected

With an average of 2.1m over their first three episodes, Life Unexpected has become an instant hit for The CW.

Life Unexpected is fresher than its lead-in, One Tree Hill, though it should be expected with the freshman show versus the seven year veteran but its more than that. It's the way the dynamics are written, where the storyline started. We're getting to know Baze and Cate the same way that Lux is.

Episode 3 delves into the families of Baze and Cate and shows that even though their parents were around, it was no picnic. It shows an excellent contrast into their upbringing versus Lux's.

The dinner scene was both comedic and heartfelt; we got to see why Baze and Cate are the way they are. There were also big strides made between Lux and her parents.

In just three episodes, for me, this show has become the best non supernatural show The CW has aired this season. It will be interesting to see how the relationships develop and how the storylines playout.

Review: One Tree Hill - Don't You Forget About Me

Though John Hughes has made two of my favourite films, the tribute that One Tree Hill paid to the late Hughes further solidified my argument that this show has run it's course.

The episode was centred around Haley and Quinn organising an 80s themes party for the arts programme at the high school. Haley thought everyone had forgotten
her birthday, Junk and Fergie were helping Mouth find a woman using an online dating agency. Nathan and Clay had car trouble, miles from home and Jamie conspired to get himself left home alone on purpose. Cheap Trick also made an appearance and played a few of their hits during the episode.

Weird Science, Sixteen Candles and Home Alone were the main films the episode took its story-lines from. At times, they played out certain scenes exactly the same as in the film. I felt like I would be better off watching the films themselves.

This wasn't a standalone episode but it did feel like a repeat of things they had already played out storyline wise; especially with Brooke and Julian. Though the tribute idea was good in theory, I think the execution missed the spot a few times.

The Vampire Diaries takes a bite in the UK

The Vampire Diaries premieres in the UK on Tuesday February 2nd. Already a big hit in the US, giving The CW some of its best ratings, ITV2 wasted no time in picking up the new show. The first couple of episodes were released on ITunes in November and to date, 10 episodes have been made available for purchase before the first episode airs in the UK.

Watch the trailer that's been shown in the UK, plus a quick piece that ITN did about the show featuring Nina Dobrev, Ian Somerhalder and Paul Wesley.

Review: Skins - Thomas

Skins is back and with a bang. The fourth series opened with a young girl taking drugs in a club and then jumping off a balcony into a crowded dancefloor. Pauline Quirke guest starred as a detective conducting the investigation into the under-aged girl's death. This episode was centred around Thomas; the club being where he worked.

Thomas' suspicion throughout is that Cook had something to do with the drugs the girl took. Tensions were already high between the two from the last series which results in a bathroom confrontation. Another confrontation between the two reveals the actual truth of who gave the dead girl the drugs which will directly lead into the next episode.

Thomas spends most of the episode feeling guilty, whether it be his responsibilities to his family, the death of the young girl or his relationship with Pandora. His internal struggle with his friends, mother and her faith burden him throughout.

It was refreshing to see Thomas outside the lifestyle that the main characters live in. It helped show and understand his struggle and a little more of his family, which wasn't explored as much, in the last series. Thomas' last scene showed that though he has to do certain things, he isn't completly happy or comfortable with it. I know that every episode is centred around a character but with this episode, I felt that the way they played out the storyline of the preacher's daughter seemed rushed but in the confines of the episode, I guess this is what they needed to do to move the character to where he ended up.

Quote of the episode from J.J - "What I like about Reese is, she's a virgin you can believe in."

Scrub out Time

It might be a little harsh for me to say but out of the ABC comedies, Scrubs has become that annoying person who was funny the first and maybe second time but now it's the hundreth time of hearing the same joke and it's unfunny, boring and kind of sad.

The latest episode with Turk made me believe I was watching an episode from season 1, he just didn't have his equally immature best friend with him. I wasn't asking for much but a little growth from the now "Chief of Surgery". Things that used to work seems tired and recycled. I was waiting to see how things played out once JD left the canvass but the jokes feel as cold as a cadaver at times.

The way Drew and Denise have been played out the last couple of episodes seems slightly lost at times and having Drew reveal he was married last week seemed to come out of nowhere and I don't feel it's moved them anywhere.

There have been small glimpses of the potential of the medical school students but I feel that with too much time spent on JD in the early parts of the series, it didn't give the others a real chance to develop. The show should have either not come back this season or a clean break should have been made with JD at the end of what was a fitting finale last season.

Fav Scene of the Week 17th - 23rd Jan

This is a bit late then usual due to technical issues. My favourite scene of last week was from How I Met Your Mother. It was pretty hard for me to whittle it down to a scene from the episode called 'Jenkins'. There were so many funny moments to pick from.

I checked out of the premise of how Ted met the mother of his kids a couple of series ago but what has kept me going as been Barney, Robin, Lily and Marshall. Most of the time, they steal the show (especially Barney) and Ted, at times, becomes a side thought.

The scene I eventually chose was Jenkins apologising to Marshall for kissing him but him being more concerned that Lily knows the kiss actually happened and then what happens when she does. I love Lily's reaction as its not the soft and peaceful Lily that we're used to.

Fav Scene of the Week 10th - 16th Jan

Hidden underneath the drama on NBC's latenight, the network gave a double helping of 30 Rock on Thursday. There were too many scenes for me to pick from but I chose Liz finally revealing her secret friend for Jenna.

Liz is always having to take care of Tracy and Jenna, sometimes you forget that Liz and Jenna used to live together before 'The Girlie Show'. It's funny the lengths that Liz goes to make sure the show goes on.

Letterman weighs in on NBC/Leno/Conan

The NBC Leno/Conan situation has definitely been the kind of drama that some shows dream of writing.

Having taken scripted content off 10pm for Leno, the network will now be looking for things to fill the spot now Leno is being moved to 11:35pm. David Letterman offers his own idea of a drama that can fill the now vacated timeslot.

Fav Scene of the Week 3rd - 9th Jan 2010

Not all of the shows have made their return in the new year but I decided to pick something anyway. This video isn't a scene but three clips that stood out for me. They are from Better Off Ted, the first from two episodes that were shown this week. It wasn't just the scenes as a whole but Veronica's lines and Portia De Rossi's delivery and expressions during it.

Is ABC's Wednesday Night Complete?

Ugly Betty had it first airing at 10pm on Wednesday but is it a good fit with ABC's comedy block.

It's now been established that ABC has hit the right note with new comedies Modern Family and Cougar Town. With these breakout shows and The Middle, Wednesday has become a success for the network. There have been obvious hiccups, with the now cancelled Hank and Eastwick. Repeats of Modern Family have since taken Hank's spot but this week a new episode of The Middle was aired.

Eastwick's lost has been Ugly Betty gain. As soon as news broke of Eastwick's cancellation, talk was being made about Ugly Betty receiving that slot. The show had been struggling on Friday and fans thought a move could save the show from possible cancellation.

This meant Lost had to move to Tuesdays; I guess the network didn't want to change a winning team. With Lost airing its final season, it could be seen as ABC testing what could possibly be the line-up come September. It's a safe bet that Modern Family and Cougar Town will be renewed. The Middle has a good chance and this week's ratings will help their case, achieving 8.2 million, with a little help from an appearance from Brooke Shields.

The 8pm slot is still up for grabs and Better Off Ted fans would like the show to be moved there. Unfortunately with low ratings and the network burning off double episodes to finish its order in January, its unlikely to return for a third season. Scrubs will get the 8pm slot on January 27th and February 3rd, to finish off its current season. Ratings for them has also been disappointing. The show has been less impressive and should have ended last season.

Ugly Betty's Wednesday debut only managed 5.1m, less then the average of the cancelled Eastwick. Some of the episodes have been better than last season and Justin's growth has been interesting and touching to watch. Part of the problem is that once people stop watching, it's hard to get them back. When people are raving about other shows, then you end up checking those out instead; too many people have given up on this show. If ratings don't improve for the next few episodes, then I think I'll be proved right in my prediction of this show being cancelled.

Better Off Ted: Don't Fight It, Watch It

Better Off Ted is smart, witty, packed with one liners and is also a show that not a lot of people are watching. While more viewers are flocking to Modern Family and Cougar Town on a Wednesday, Better Off Ted has being struggling on a Tuesday.

It's no secret that I like this show; I even changed my Twitter image to a Better Off Ted photo. I share the opinion of others that this show would be much better on a Wednesday with The Middle, Modern Family and Cougar Town.

Before the fall season started, I thought Modern Family and Cougar Town would struggle, but when I saw how good they were doing, it gave me hope for Better Off Ted. Unfortunately not enough viewers haven't been knocking on the door.

People might be raving about Sue, on Glee, but there is another female with great one liners; Veronica, played by Portia de Rossi. You can't forget Phil and Lem, two scientist who in the last episode were upset that a human replaced the clean-up robot. With lines like "I feel like my heart has been kicked in the testicles", this show provides laughter in every episode.

This month, ABC will be burning off episodes by showing two a week. I personally don't think the show was given a proper chance. Half of the first season was shown from June to August, bringing a ratings dip to its figures from March to May. The recent episode shown after a bowl game, gave the show some of it's best ratings but this doesn't seem to be enough.

Ken Tucker, EW.com, has started a save Better Off Ted Campaign and he regularly posts about the show the day after it airs.

Will Monday Be A Good Fit For Fringe?

On Monday January 11th, Fox will be airing a never seen before episode from season one. The episode is against NBC's Heroes, which is also struggling with ratings. Though this is a one off, could this move save the show?

When I first heard about the Time Warner/Fox problems, my first thought went to Fringe and how the possible blackout could effect this show, more than how it would effect others. With a debut of around 9 million viewers in September 2008 and 9.3 million for its season finale in May 2009, you would think there was nothing to worry about. A lot can change in a year. Now shown on a different evening, the second season debut managed 7.8 million in September 2009.

The first new episode after the world series only attracted 4.95m, a series-low. The show climbed back up with 5.9 million with the following episode. Unfortunately for fans, these continuing numbers are worrying.

A sigh or relief was breathed when Time Warner and Fox issued a statement of agreement, that wouldn't stop broadcasting Fox in 13 million homes. I hope that Monday's episode will give the show a ratings boost, then this would show that there are more people that want to watch but the show needs to move from a congested Thursday night. This move could also show the network why they have to renew it, other than the fact that this show is good. Sometimes a little movement helps a long way.

TV in January

The holidays are over and you've missed your last opportunity to pack in a TV marathon. The TV schedule will resume normal service as well as the working week.

This month will see the last 3 episodes of Dollhouse, Scrubs and Better Off Ted will start to be burned off with double episodes. New shows, Human Target Life Unexpected, The Deep End and Spartacus get their debut. Some of your favourites might not even be back yet.

The TVaddict.com have complied a TV calendar for January to help remind us (especially me) when shows are returning this month.
